If you live in Kathmandu, the question comes up at least once a year — usually around the monsoon, when the taps start running a little cloudier than usual. So: is tap water safe to drink in Kathmandu? In 2026, the honest answer is: not without treatment, and not for everyone.
Below is what is actually in valley tap water, what cheap filters can and cannot handle, and a simple decision tree for choosing between boiled water, an RO purifier, or a delivered jar.
What is actually in Kathmandu tap water?
Most of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) supply comes from a mix of surface sources (Sundarijal, Bagmati tributaries, Melamchi) and shallow groundwater. The treatment quality varies sharply by season and by neighbourhood. In independent testing over the past five years, the three issues that show up most often are:
- Microbiological contamination — coliforms and occasionally E. coli, especially during and right after the monsoon.
- Turbidity — sediment and silt visible to the eye, particularly in older pipe sections.
- Chemical residues — chlorine from treatment, plus occasional ammonia and nitrate spikes in dense urban areas.
Heavy metals (iron, manganese, occasionally arsenic) appear in certain shallow groundwater wells. If your building uses a private borehole, treat that as a separate water source with its own annual testing.
If the water from your kitchen tap is ever visibly cloudy, smells like chlorine for more than a few seconds, or tastes metallic — do not drink it untreated.
Does boiling water make it safe to drink?
Boiling does one job well: it kills bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. A rolling boil for at least one minute (longer at altitude) handles the microbial risk completely.
But boiling does not remove sediment, heavy metals, nitrates, or chemical residues. If your supply has those issues, boiling concentrates them slightly as water evaporates. For most Kathmandu homes, boiling alone is a short-term answer, not a daily one.
What about RO filters at home?
A point-of-use reverse-osmosis filter is genuinely effective. A good unit will strip out 95-99% of dissolved solids, most heavy metals, and (with a UV stage) microbiology.
